Our Legacy Story

A Legacy of Compassion and Unity

In 2005, shortly after the London bombings, a Christian woman named Shirley encountered a young man sitting alone at a bus stop. He was a Muslim and looked visibly despondent, struggling with feelings of alienation amidst the growing tension and suspicion spreading through London.

Sensing his pain, Shirley sat beside him and gently said, “May I pray with you? I won’t pretend to understand exactly what you're going through, but I feel that right now, you need someone to stand with you in prayer.” The young man, deeply touched by her compassion, accepted.

After their brief moment of shared faith, Shirley promised to return and pray with him whenever she could. Her simple, selfless act in a society that suddenly felt cold and divided left a profound impact on the young man. Inspired by her kindness, he made a quiet vow: one day, he would build a house of worship in her honour—a place where people would remember her compassion and be inspired to show tolerance and love to others, regardless of religion or circumstance.

Years later, this promise was fulfilled. In the town of Hastings, Sierra Leone, the Tom and Shirley House of Worship was built—a sanctuary open to people of all faiths, offering a space for rest, prayer, shared meals, and community connection. It quickly grew beyond a place of worship, becoming a community center where residents gathered to discuss local concerns, support one another, and celebrate unity.

During one such gathering, community members voiced a heartfelt request: a school where their children could be educated together in love and mutual respect. In response, Shirley Montessori International School was established in 2020—a school that welcomes children of all faiths and backgrounds, fostering unity within a nurturing Christian environment. It stands today not only as a center for learning, but as a living tribute to one woman’s act of grace, and the ripple effect of compassion that followed.

Community collaboration

Community members regularly gather at the Shirley International House of Worship to discuss local needs, plan initiatives, and explore volunteer opportunities that strengthen our shared mission.

We welcome local and international volunteers who feel called to contribute their time, skills, or knowledge to our school and wider community.

Opportunities may include:

  • Teaching assistance

  • Creative and performing arts workshops

  • Sports and physical education coaching

  • Campus beautification and gardening

  • Mentorship and leadership development

Community participation in building a four bedroom extension to the volunteer Guesthouse

We offer a warm and welcoming environment for volunteers, including assistance with accommodation where possible. If you are passionate about education, service, or mission work, we invite you to partner with us.

At Shirley Montessori International School, we actively encourage community participation to foster a sense of shared ownership and to create meaningful employment opportunities within the community.

Both women and men play an equally vital role in all aspects of volunteer engagement—from constructing school buildings to crafting classroom furniture—ensuring that everyone has a chance to contribute and make a lasting impact.
